Quite simply one of the best, and terrifying books I have ever read. Are the possibilities of the future of 1984 becoming worringly apparent? I hope not.
George Orwell’s magnificent 1984 was published today (8th June) in 1949.
And as a mini celebration I’ve posted just a few quotes from this book, adding simply, that it must be read.
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
– Part 1, Chapter 1
“People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the registers, every record of everything you had ever done was wiped out, your one-time existence was denied and then forgotten. You were abolished, annihilated: vaporized was the usual word.”
– Part 1, Chapter 1
“Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date”
– Part 1, Chapter 3
“a nation of warriors and fanatics, marching forward in perfect unity, all thinking the same thoughts and shouting the same slogans, perpetually working, fighting, triumphing, persecuting – three hundred million people all with the same face.”
– Part 1, Chapter 7
“It was like swimming against a current that swept you backwards however hard you struggled, and then suddenly deciding to turn round and go with the current instead of opposing it. Nothing had changed except your own attitude; the predestined thing happened in any case.”
– Part 3, Chapter 4
BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU
